Economically, Brentwood is based on finance, health care, and education. Workers commute to Nashville (about 25 minutes away) or to one of the smaller towns in the surrounding area. Brentwood’s cost of living is lower than the U.S. average, and there are no state taxes. Historically Brentwood has long been an affluent part of Tennessee. By the Civil War, thousands of people had recognized that the soil was fertile and that Brentwood’s location – so close to Chicago, Atlanta, the Carolinas, and more -- was ideal. Brentwood’s population saw a steady upward turn in the early 1980s, and had more than doubled by 2000, from 9,400 people to almost 24,000.
